Corfuโs popular tourist places are famous for their resorts, offering organized accommodation, beach services, and a vibrant atmosphere for every kind of traveler.
Central Corfu
Central Corfu is the islandโs most populated area, home to around 60,000 residents. It includes Corfu Town and the municipal district of Achilleion. Therefore, Central Corfu is the most densely inhabited part of the island.
The region offers a mix of traditional villages and seaside tourist resorts, with beaches on both the East and West coasts.
On the East, popular spots include Benitses, Perama, Kanoni, and of course Corfu Town itself, rich in history and monuments โ including the Achilleion Palace.
On the West coast, youโll find some of Corfuโs most famous beaches: the nudist beach of Myrtiotissa, Pelekas with Kontogyalos Beach, Ermones, Aghios Gordios, and the islandโs most cosmopolitan beach, Glyfada.

Northeast Corfu
Northeast Corfu is one of the islandโs most diverse areas, known for its pristine beaches, mountainous landscapes, and picturesque traditional villages nestled around Mount Pantokrator.
Pantokrator, Corfuโs highest peak at 915 meters, dominates the region. Just west of it lies Stravoskadi at 890 meters. Scattered around the slopes are untouched villages like Spartilas and Strynilas, where time seems to have stood still.
Further up lies Old Perithea, a once-abandoned medieval village hidden in the mountains to evade pirate raids. In recent years, it has been revitalized with charming tavernas and restored stone-built houses, making it a unique cultural stop.
For those seeking quieter holidays with crystal-clear waters, the area offers countless small coves and seaside hamlets. The northernmost highlight is Kassiopi, a vibrant village with ancient roots, once home to a Roman theater visited by Nero, and a large fortress still visible today.
Nearby is the wild, unspoiled Erimitis region โ a stretch of paradise beaches under threat from development plans.
To the north lies Antinioti Lagoon, Corfuโs second-largest wetland and an important ecological zone. To its east is the tranquil Agios Spyridon Karniaris beach.
South of Kassiopi, the coast is dotted with a series of peaceful pebble coves and traditional tavernas: Agios Stefanos, Kerasia, Kouloura, Kalami, Agni, Krouzeri, Kaminaki, Nissaki, and Barbati โ all part of the scenic region known as Old Sinies.
Further south, from Pyrgi to Corfu Town, the area becomes more touristically developed. Resorts like Ipsos, Dassia, and Gouvia offer a wide range of accommodations, including large hotels up to 5 stars. Gouvia also hosts the islandโs main yacht marina.
Notably, the Corfu General Hospital is located in Tzavros โ a modern facility, though still lacking adequate medical staff.

Best Resorts in Northwestern Corfu
Northwestern Corfu is a vast area filled with stunning natural beauty, long sandy beaches, and some of the islandโs most famous tourist resorts.
On the west coast lies Paleokastritsa, one of Corfuโs most iconic locations. Its dramatic coastline is best admired from the hilltop village of Lakones, while hidden coves to the south offer peaceful escapes.
Further north, the area of Sidari and Peroulades is known for its rare sandstone formations. This is where you’ll find the famous Canal d’Amour, the breathtaking Cape Drastis, and the dramatic cliffs of Loggas Beach.
Other major resort areas include:
- Agios Georgios Pagon and Agios Stefanos Avliotes โ large, sandy beaches with family-friendly resorts on the west coast.
- Roda and Acharavi โ popular seaside destinations on the northern shore, both offering a mix of nightlife and relaxing scenery.
The area also hides smaller gems like the twin coves of Porto Timoni (north of Agios Georgios), and peaceful spots like Astrakeri, Afionas, and Arillas.
Inland, the region is dotted with semi-mountainous traditional villages collectively known as the Gyrou Villages โ a term dating back to the 13th century CE. Many locals here descend from Byzantine soldiers once stationed at Angelokastro, the islandโs western fortress, located near Krini, above Paleokastritsa.

South-East Corfu Resorts
In South-East Corfu, there are large tourist resorts such as Kavos and well-known fishing villages. The second largest town on the island is here and is Lefkimi.
The tourist destinations of Moraitika and Messongi are among the largest on the island. With thousands of visitors, Messonghi has the only sandy beach on the east coast.
Here are the fishing villages of Boukari and Petriti with a large harbor each for fishing boats, and several fish tavernas.
Lefkimi is the second most populous city of Corfu and is located a few kilometers north of Kavos. It has grown significantly in recent years and has become a modern city. It doesn’t reminisce in any way about the city of the 80s, where the dilapidated houses and a sense of regression and delay were present.
Kavos is the favorite destination for young British tourists.
The place has evolved into a huge night spot with notorious nightlife to satisfy the needs of the oppressed British youngsters. Needless to say, anything more.
Further down and after the southern cape of Corfu, called Asprokavos(White cape), to the west, there is the wild cape of Arkoudilas.

Southwest Corfu
Southwest Corfu is dominated by endless sandy beaches and quite traditional villages.
The large traditional villages of the interior seem to be stuck in time; life flows slowly, and they do not seem to have changed much.
The same happens with the huge beaches. Except for the beach of Agios Georgios, with the rapid tourist development in recent years. But most villages remain almost untouched by the uncontrolled tourist exploitation. In the south of Corfu, places preserve their natural beauty, and time flows slowly.
Chalikounas and Issos, Agios Georgios of Argyradon, Marathias or else Marta or Malta, and the beach of Agia Varvara, or Santa Barbara. All these beaches are in a line that extends for several miles.
The handsome Gardenos beach is further south, followed by the long beach of Vitalades that ends at Lakka or Canoula beach. Close to the Southern tip is the Cape of Arkoudillas, which has an amazing, unspoiled beach itself. This beach, in turn, reaches Asprokavos cape, which also has its beautiful sandy beach.
The area is wild, the Greek name translates to “bear place,” the weather is harsh, and the landscape is difficult without roads. We find abandoned remnants of old medieval Mansions here on the hills above Arkoudilla; during the Venetian era, they belonged to the Quartano family, many of whom live in Italy and the USA today. More in the post.
