Corfu Airport opened on March 22, 1937, with a 600 m runway and the landing of a Heston Phoenix piloted by Efstratios Xidis. After World War II, the runway was extended by about 200 m using rubble from bombed buildings to reclaim part of Halikiopoulos Lake.
