A Former Fishing Port

Benitses Marina is located in the village of Benitses on the eastern coast of Corfu.
The harbor has long been part of village life, shaped by fishing, small boats, and the daily rhythm of the sea. Today, it sits within a modernized waterfront, but its roots remain tied to the old coastal community that once worked and lived around it.
This article looks back at the old harbor of Benitses — its role in the village, and the changes it has undergone over time.

The beginnings of the harbor

Benitses sits quietly on the eastern coast of Corfu, where the sea bends into a small natural cove. Long before it had any formal structure, it was simply a place where boats were pulled in and tied by hand, depending on the weather and the needs of the village.
Around the 1960s, the first real effort to shape a proper harbor began. It was not a project in the modern sense, but a community task. The residents of Benitses worked together, slowly and with limited means, to give shelter to their fishing boats. Stones were placed, small improvements were made, and over time, a simple but functioning fishing port emerged from the natural shoreline.
Life as a fishing port

For decades after that, life here followed the rhythm of fishing. The harbor was not separate from the village — it was part of it. Men left before sunrise and returned with the sea’s changing moods. Nets were repaired along the shore, boats were maintained in the open air, and the entire waterfront carried the quiet repetition of daily work.

This remained the character of Benitses for many years: a fishing village first, with the harbor as its working heart.
Changes after 2002

Around 2002, the harbor underwent major construction and land reclamation works. The original small natural cove, which had functioned as the village’s fishing port, was filled in and transformed.
The shoreline was extended, and the docking area significantly expanded, replacing the natural shape of the original harbor.
Since then, the harbor has gone through a series of administrative and operational changes. Different arrangements have come and gone over time, and the current management structure has not remained fixed or clearly consistent.
Present situation

Today, the harbor continues to function, serving various types of vessels and activities. But for those who remember its earlier form, it still carries the trace of what it once was — a small fishing port built by hand, shaped slowly by the people of Benitses and their life by the sea.
Closing perspective
Despite the physical and administrative changes over time, the harbor remains a central feature of Benitses, reflecting its long-standing relationship with the sea and the village’s historical dependence on fishing.
