Crafting Your Dreamy Itinerary
Time to talk about how you’ll be island-hopping like a boss in the Ionian paradise.
Think of ferries as your trusty steeds, whisking you away to new horizons and exciting adventures.
Ferries connect all of the Ionian Islands, but these islands extend in a narrow vertical line from north to south. As a result, you need to choose your initial gateway and plan your itinerary accordingly.
We propose two options: the first is to start from Corfu, and the second is to start from Lefkada from the Greek mainland. The choice is yours.
But, while ferries are your BFFs for some island connections, others might require you to embrace your inner sailor with local boats or even take a hop-on-a-cloud flight. After all, keep in mind that hundreds of smaller islands in the archipelago await to surprise you.
Corfu, Zakynthos, and Kefalonia have airports, so you may choose to start your Odyssey by picking one of those destinations first.
Now, let’s talk about a game-changer that’ll have you feeling like the ruler of the road – when on a bigger island renting a car.
This is your ticket to unlocking the ultimate freedom and exploration. Picture cruising along scenic coastal roads, wind in your hair, and the thrill of discovering hidden gems that aren’t on any tourist map.
Especially on Corfu, Kefalonia, and Zante, having your wheels means you’re the captain of your journey. And who doesn’t want to say “Hello, freedom!” to that?
So, whether you’re sailing on ferries, hopping on boats, soaring through the skies, or revving up a rented car, you’re about to navigate the Ionian Islands like a true explorer.
Get ready for an adventure that’s as varied as the islands themselves. Buckle up, because freedom is calling your name, and the road (and sea) less traveled is yours to conquer!
A new way that will boost your desire to explore the beautiful Ionian Islands
According to the “Greek Water Airports”, an emerging seaplane company, trial flights of seaplanes will begin in the Ionian soon, based in Corfu and extending to two other licensed waterways in Paxos and Patras. The aim was to commence commercial flights in the spring of 2022 with the start of the new tourist season.
The licensing of waterways in Erikoussa, Mathraki, and Othoni is nearing completion, allowing them to be included in the network.
Technical documents have also been submitted for approval for Zakynthos, Lefkada, Meganissi, Ithaki, and Cephalonia.
The company’s ultimate goal, including the waterway in Ioannina, is to have 12 waterways in the region and sufficient aircraft to make the project sustainable.
The big problem is the time-consuming bureaucracy.
However, with the 2020 legislation, the time required for licensing regional waterways has been reduced considerably, as they are exempt from the mandatory approval of an Environmental Impact Study and are only required to provide Environmental Commitments, for which the procedure is simpler and less time-consuming.
Let’s hope that soon, an easy way to bridge all these beauties together will be a reality.
Getting There
Most travelers fly into Athens and then take a domestic flight or ferry to the Ionian Islands. Direct international flights to Corfu, Zakynthos, and Kefalonia are also available during the peak season.
